74 Percent of Jackson Registered Sex Offenders in Compliance

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — On Wednesday evening, the Jackson Police Department conducted an eight-hour sex offender compliance operation to verify the addresses for 80 of the 94 registered sex offenders in the city of Jackson. The operation was initiated by the police department’s Special Investigation Bureau’s Sex Offender Compliance Unit and assisted by other Investigators in the Criminal Investigation Division, Patrol Officers, Gang Unit Investigators and deputies with the U.S. Marshals Service. Of the 80 sex offenders who were checked, 59 were found in compliance, but one was arrested on an unrelated violation of probation warrant. Eight of the offenders were not in compliance and further investigation is required. Police attempted but were unable to verify the addresses for 13 of the offenders because they were not home at the time of the compliance check. This does not mean that they are not in compliance. However, investigators intend to follow-up at those addresses at a later, unannounced time. Since 59 of the 80 or almost 74 percent of the sex offenders were verified in compliance, police consider the operation a success. The goal is to ensure that sex offenders obey the laws and rules of the sex offender registry requirements. Police will continue to conduct random compliance checks to ensure the safety of the community.
