GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — After Tuesday’s republican primary, we now know who will be running in August to be sheriff in Gibson County. Candidate Rodney Wright beat Jerry “Jay” Morris in an extremely tight republican primary race. Wright won his party’s nomination with just shy of 50 percent of the vote. Morris had just shy of 49 percent, and write-in candidates took the rest. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News caught up with Wright after his win, and he says he is excited about his victory and looks forward to being sheriff. “I believe that we will be able to show that we can get more for the money,” Wright said. “That we’ll be able to save money, and I believe that we’ll be able to show that we can be much more aggressive in the fight against drugs in the county and waging a war on crime here every day.” Wright will take on incumbent democratic sheriff Chuck Arnold and independent Paul Thomas in the August general election. Sheriff Arnold did not return our phone calls or messages left for him, but Thomas issued this statement: “My campaign looks forward to discussing with Gibson County voters our plan to bring integrity, accountability, fiscal responsibility and professionalism to the sheriff’s department. I believe my almost 20 years as a law enforcement officer, my experience serving in the united states marine corps, and bachelors degree in business management make me the most qualified candidate to effectively and efficiently run the sheriff’s department.”
