Fire Officials Warn of Dangerous Burning Conditions

MADISON COUNTY,. Tenn.,- Fire officials in Madison County are warning residents not to burn in the weather conditions West Tennessee has seen this week. Investigators said a shed was destroyed in a fire Wednesday on Crawford Springs Road after a winds carried a spark rekindled in a brush fire. Homowner Elizabeth Cathey said she first tried to put out the flames, before firefighters arrived. “I ran out and got the hose and wet what I could at the front,” Cathey explained. Fire officials were able to put out the flames in minutes, and said this is an example of why burn permits were not issued Tuesday or Wednesday. “Outdoor burning with these high winds and low humidity is always extremely dangerous,” Madison Fire Chief Eric Turner said. Cathey believes nearly $6,000 worth of equipment was destroyed in the shed fire. Chief Turner said the family will not be issued a citation for burning without a permit.
