TRENTON, Tenn. — Turning Point, an adolescent alcohol and drug treatment program coordinated through Pathways, is closing due to the end of a state grant. West Tennessee Healthcare was notified on April 21 that the state legislature did not approve the $472,000 annual state grant that has funded an Adolescent Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program since the early 90s. The program is being discontinued because the annual state grant is the primary source of funding for the program, along with TennCare and private insurance reimbursement. West Tennessee Healthcare did not participate in funding the program. The program is located in Trenton and is staffed by 13 employees who are funded through the grant and other payment sources. Program employees will have an opportunity to apply for other positions within the West Tennessee Healthcare system. The 2-3 month long Turning Point treatment program provides residential, education and treatment services to adolescents, aged 13-18, with a primary or secondary alcohol and/or drug diagnosis. The program treats an average of about 8 patients and has a capacity to treat up to 12. The last day that patients were admitted to the program was May 1. Pathways will continue to provide outpatient services locally to adolescents, aged 13-18, struggling with substance abuse problems through its Breakthrough program.
