TCAP Scores Cause Report Card Delay

DYERSBURG, Tenn. — Several local students will end the school year not knowing if they passed or failed. This is because the Tennessee Department of Education has told District officials, TCAP scores will be a week later than expected. Neel Durbin, Director of Dyersburg City Schools, said TCAP scores are important, and that’s why his district has decided to wait for them to come in before issuing report cards. “It’s 25 percent of students’ grades and we don’t have it, so it’s creating obvious problems,” Durbin said. According to officials, the delay is due to a change in the state’s scoring process. Local school officials said the Tennessee Department of Education is giving them three options when it comes to the scores: they can wait for the release, give grades now but change them when the final scores are available, or waive the scores all together. “Students will be able to get them, just not in a timely manner,” Durbin said. He added that for some students it’s a matter of pass or fail. “For a few of them, they won’t know if they will advance to the next grade.” Jackson-Madison County Schools, in a press release sent out on Wednesday, said they too plan to wait on the test scores. Parents can pick up report cards at the School Service Center on North Parkway.
