Haywood YMCA Shuts Doors for Other Opportunities

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — After 18 years in operation, the doors of the Haywood County YMCA building are closed. With Haywood County schools on the brink of summer break, the YMCA said parents don’t need to worry. The building closing doesn’t mean the programming has stopped. “We’ll run a variety of youth programs, but they won’t be coming to the facilities we used to serve out of,” YMCA West TN President Edwin Hays said. Hays said moving to the new “Y Without Walls” system is best for Haywood County. He said it will allow their volunteers to partner with other community groups for activities all summer. “Looking at all angles at this point, the ‘Y Without Walls’ program makes the most sense to get the biggest bang for the buck to the community,” Hays said. The West Tennessee YMCA says with this transition, almost all employees were transferred to other locations, and the main office is now in the Haywood County courthouse.
