UNION CITY, Tenn.- New jobs coming to Obion County could mean a revival for the area’s struggling workforce. MVP International, a home fragrance company, is on the way to northwest Tennessee. With it comes hope for the jobless. “We’re really excited…that 100 new jobs are coming to Obion County and Union City,” Obion County Mayor, Benny McGuire, said. The addition of these jobs is part of a $2 million investment. Obion County residents believe these jobs will help revitalize the struggling area. “I’m very excited,” Elwanda Murphy, an Obion County resident, said. “Our economy certainly needs it in this area.” The county has struggled to recover since Goodyear moved out in 2011. Currently unemployment sits at 11.2 percent. “Goodyear went out,” Resident Jerry Jones said. “That hurt the economy. Now the economy is picking up some and it’s helping Union City grow some.” Lindsay Frilling, with the Obion County Chamber of Commerce, said the area was picked because of its residents. “What they find in our area is that we have an excellent work force,” Frilling said. “Because at the end of the day, it’s about people.” People, who Obion County Mayor Benny McGuire believes, could really use a break. “I think there are several people out there that having hard times because of unemployment,” McGuire said. “And I think that for 100 people, [this will] be a shot in the arm.” MVP expects the new facility to be fully operational by next year.
