Miss Tennessee kicks off in Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. — Women from across the state vying for the Miss Tennessee crown have officially landed in Jackson for a week of competition. Reigning Miss Tennessee, Shelby Thompson, said her year representing the state has been incredible. “I’m still reveling in this year. It’s been so amazing to be able to have this opportunity and you have 36 incredible girls that are ready to take my place,” Thompson said. On Sunday, contestants arrived to kick off their week in Jackson. “It’s a long week but a fun week,” Cindy Smith said, a mother of one of the contestants. From the stage to signing autographs, these women say it’s an exciting time. “Meeting 35 other strong women that are talented, that are smart, and in today’s society that uplifts me to know that there are other women out there that have career goals that are strong, working toward them, and I appreciate that,” Stephanie McKain, Miss Banana Pudding Festival, said. Christine Williamson, Miss Memphis, says her local title in itself has been rewarding. “To see what you can do with the crown, not just making appearances, but putting a crown on a little girl’s head and saying ‘Hi I’m here for you; I’m here to make you a princess today’, it’s been amazing,” Williamson said. For many, the pageant week is a family affair. “It’s very exciting and I’m always nervous for her but it gives me excitement, makes me want to try for the same thing. She’s my older sister and I really look up to her,” Carley Howell said, a contestant’s sister. Thompson said after Saturday’s crowning is when Miss Tennessee 2014 will have the most to look forward to. “I have traveled 80,000 miles. Every day is different and I’ve been able to be challenged and feel like I add value every day and that’s been such a great adventure,” Thompson said. The Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant begins June 18 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center. It lasts until Saturday, June 21. One woman will be crowned Saturday night.
