Medon manhunt ends in arrest

MEDON, Tenn. — An afternoon manhunt in South Madison County lands one man behind bars even though he hasn’t been charged with a crime. Officers from the Madison County Sheriffs Department began combing the woods off Bowman Road near Medon just after 2 p.m. Friday. Residents said they were surprised to see something like this happen in their close knit neighborhood. “Nothing like this happens out here,” said James Pack. “It’s really quiet and people get along out here.” According to the Madison County Sheriffs Department, this incident escalated after a domestic dispute on the 700 block of Bowman Road. They said the man threatened his family, grabbed a hand gun and ran off into the woods. “The suspect in this case had fled the scene and was armed,” said Capt. Anthony Heavner with the Madison Count Sheriff’s Department. “He then went into the surround wooded area.” The sheriff’s department also called in the Tennessee Highway Patrol chopper to help with their search. Lonnie Mackey was pulling into his driveway when he saw the helicopter in his backyard. “When I came in and drove up a helicopter was sitting there ready to get up and go,” Mackey said. After about three hours, deputies located the 30 year-old man and took him into custody. Lonnie Mackey said it was a sight to see. “The helicopter ran him out,” said Mackey. “Then he came out and said he gave up.” Those who live in the area are happy everything ended so quickly without anyone getting hurt. “He told us to go up in the house and next thing we knew about 10 minutes later, they caught him,” James Pack said. According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, the man is currently being held at the Madison County Jail awaiting a mental evaluation. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News has chosen not to release the man’s name, because at this time he has not been charged with a crime.
