Local Korean War veteran surprised with replacement medals

HORNSBY, Tenn. — Eighty-two-year-old Homer Lee Doyle, a Korean War veteran, sat in amazement as his wife fought back tears. On Wednesday, community members presented him with replacement military service medals after the originals were stolen from his mother’s house more than 50 years ago. “It’s such a wonderful feeling for him to get back what he’s lost,” his wife, Lynn said. Doyle said when the medals were stolen, he often thought of this time in Korea and the friends he’d lost in combat. “It’s just a reminder of what I did and memories from the war,” Doyle said. That’s why members of The Real Army Wives, a military advocacy group, called on government officials to get the Korean War hero replacement medals. Doyle served in the Air Force for four years and received four medals, three of which were replaced on Wednesday. “It’s something important and something I treasure,” Doyle said. Member of the advocacy group said it only took about two months to get the replacement medals, but for Doyle and his family their kind gesture will last a lifetime.
