DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Mental evaluations have been ordered for the man accused of beating and stabbing his father to death earlier this month. On Thursday, Clayton Nelson’s attorney requested he go through a series of mental evaluations before the case against him moves forward. Nelson, 29, is facing first degree murder and theft charges after police say he killed his father, 59-year-old Jeffery Nelson, in July and stole his neighbor‘s $800 television. Investigators told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News the killing could have been motivated by drug use, and say on July 12, they found Jeffrey’s body covered in sheets in his living room with his throat cut and his head beaten. Investigators also say they found a hammer with hair and blood on it and two bloody knives at the scene. The large bloody footprints found at the scene are consistent with Converse sneakers Clayton had on at the time of his arrest. Clayton Nelson is still being held without bond.
