JACKSON, Tenn.–24 hours after gun shots ring through an east Jackson apartment complex, killing 17-year-old Shomari Peterson, Jr. police revealed some surprising information. Jackson Police Chief Gill Kendrick said to his knowledge this apartment complex is not more dangerous than others in the city. “I wouldn’t say so I really haven’t looked at any type of specific locations to say I’ve done any type of comparison,” said Kendrick. Some residents living in that neighborhood disagree. “All this gun violence going on…I can not deal with it. I can not deal with it,” said Amanda Gill, who has lived in the Parkway East Apartments for two years. There have been 89 calls requesting officers come to 33 Carver Avenue since January 1 of this year. Four reporting gun shots, three saying a murder has allegedly occurred. After investigation, one of those was ruled justified, another as an aggravated assault. The third was Sunday, where two people were gunned down. Police Chief Kendrick said a little less than half of the calls are met with officers being proactive and catching crime in the act. “Any time there is an officer in the area there’s something we’re detecting or there is a greater possibility of us detecting it,” said Kendrick. One day after the latest violent homicide, neighbors say even if police are patrolling, this is not a place they enjoy calling home. “This is not a place for no one to be raising their kids,” said Gill.
