Magnitude 2.9 earthquake strikes near Tiptonville

LAKE COUNTY, Tenn. — A magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred around midnight last night about 2.5 miles northwest of Tiptonville, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake took place in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which is the most seismically active in North America east of the Rockies, according to the agency.
