SCOTTS HILL, Tenn. — Mrs. Kim Duncan is this week’s Educator of the week presented by The Tennessee Education Lottery.” In Kim Duncan’s third-grade math class, she has the perfect formula of hands-on learning and even singing. “There is never a dull moment, always new things happening. So there is nothing boring about the job of teaching,” Duncan said. Duncan, who has taught at Scotts Hill Elementary for 32 years, said she understands math can be difficult for students. That’s why the Lambuth grad tries a fun and motivational approach in the classroom. “Children usually fear math a little bit, so I try to make it as entertaining as possible. We do a lot of activities with math, and they just usually do really well.” Duncan said. Duncan uses a variety of hands-on activities including singing, using flash cards, or making numerical groups with rubber bands and candy. Duncan tries to build up her students’ confidence and their ability to remember what they have learned. “It’s long hours, it’s hard work, it doesn’t stop at 3 o’clock. Sometimes it doesn’t stop at 10 o’clock. Lots of papers to grade, but at the end of the day I still love my job.” Duncan said. She says it is all about building relationships with her students and that she owes a lot of gratitude to her 7th-grade teacher who got her dream up and running in the education field. Duncan hopes to continue to teach these young minds and influence them to achieve their overall goals wherever life may take them. Duncan will be eligible for the state-wide Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the “Month” award.
