BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — School officials in Haywood County said they are working with the city mayor to get more school resource officers on campus. This comes after two students are caught with weapons, one a bow and arrow and the other a loaded gun. “Parents should be concerned,” said William Banks, a parent. On Saturday, police said they took a .25-caliber handgun from a student during school. A week before, another student was caught with a bow and arrow. Both have been charged with having a weapon on school grounds. Administrators said they hope they will not get to the point where metal detectors are used, but some parents said it is the only way to stop weapons from making it into school. “They should check the kids and have security at the door,” Banks said. School officials said there are two full-time resource officers who rotate between the schools in the district, and they are applying for a grant to add one or two more. Some parents said it is not enough. “I think they should put prayer back in schools,” said Laura Davis, another parent. “Prayer changes things.” “Our kids are going to school for education, not violence,” Banks added. Administrators said both students have been expelled but would not say when either of them will be back at school.
