Mild summer, rain raise questions about cotton harvest

HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — Farmers say there are questions about how the cotton crop is going to do this year because of such a mild summer and a lot of rain. “Getting cooler, it’s going to be a lot harder to get this top crop open and get it harvested,” farmer Matt Griggs said. Griggs said they may have to take some extra steps for the cotton to harvest the way it should this year. “Normally, we have to spray it once to get the process to happen,” Griggs said. “This year, because a lot of the cotton hasn’t matured, we’ll have to go back twice to do it.” The treatment on the crops helps the cotton to be harvested more quickly. The weather already has set the crop back about two weeks further than normal, making the harvest set for the beginning of October. Griggs said it all depends on how well the weather does for the rest of the month.
