Haywood Co. deputy suspended, accused of sexual misconduct

HAYWOOD COUNTY, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into a Haywood County deputy accused of sexual misconduct. “They told me they were running an investigation upon my lieutenant, Lieutenant Terry Smith, and from that, Lt. Smith was placed on administrative leave with pay,” Sheriff Melvin Bond said. Bond confirmed Smith is currently off the job, and said he has no idea why Smith is under scrutiny. “I don’t know how it happened, what has happened or anything else because I have not been advised of any of it,” Bond said. While TBI agents would not say if the investigation involves one or more incidents, the sheriff said he does not believe it was anything that happened while Smith was working. “To my knowledge, I’m not aware of when, but the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department has not been advised we’re under any investigation in any type of way,” the sheriff said. One resident who knows Smith said she was surprised. “As far as I’ve known, Terry’s always been a really good guy, really respectful to me and the community. I’ve never known him to be anything like that,” Kimberly Warren-Lemon said. Smith first worked as a Haywood County jailer and has since been promoted to Lieutenant. He currently is working as a field training officer for the sheriff’s office.
