Undefeated Cavaliers hope history doesn’t repeat itself

ALAMO, Tenn. – On paper, Crockett County and Dyersburg football look the same, but history favors the Trojans. “It would mean a lot because we’ve never beaten Dyersburg since I’ve been here,” said senior Johnny Jones. “It’s been a long time since the program has beaten Dyersburg, plus we’re trying to win a district championship.” The Cavaliers last victory over Dyersburg was in 2009. “We have to win the battle upfront. Last year, they whipped us both times up front. When that happens, you’re going to lose most of your games,” said Crockett County head coach Kevin Ward. This year, Dyersburg faces a healthy Jones. In the regular season, the running back saw limited playing time against the black and gold due to a hairline fracture in his leg. “It’s been pretty tough, but I listen to my coaches and push through. We don’t feel sorry for ourselves because we got beat in the first round of the playoffs,” explained Jones. At 4-0, the Cavaliers are poised to make a deep run in the postseason. Crockett scores over 50 points per game and holds their opponents to just 12. Come Friday, the team expects a close contest. “I’m pretty sure they’re ready to play us as much as we’re ready to play them,” said Crockett’s defensive leader Kamau Caldwell. For Crockett County, this week isn’t just about preparing for Dyersburg. It’s also moving the Cavaliers a step closer to a district title. “As a football program, we got to make sure we take care of our own home. Make sure we do everything we can to be successful during the week of practice.”
