Man accused of abusing cancer-stricken wife pleads guilty

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A Jackson man accused of abusing his wife — who is battling cancer and Parkinson’s disease — pleaded guilty Thursday in Jackson City Court. Police say Russell Wheeler tied his wife, Rhonda, to a bed with an extension cord before dragging her around the house with a towel around her neck and then locking her in a closet for several hours. The victim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 15 years ago and is getting treatment for colon and liver cancer. It is WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News’ policy not to identify domestic assault victims, but Rhonda Wheeler went on camera with us to tell her story in hopes of helping other victims.
