Rosh Hashanah celebration in Jackson

WEST JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jewish New Year celebration of Rosh Hashanah started Wednesday at sundown and will last until nightfall Friday. The holiday is regarded as a solemn festival where people are encouraged to take the opportunity for personal reflection and ask forgiveness for their wrongdoings over the past year. Spiritual leader John Kaplin from Congregation B’nai Israel says it is also a time for celebration. “Just celebrating the birth of a new year and all of the hopes and promises that that entails,” Kaplin said. “Also, it’s time for having a sense of community, revitalize the community.” Traditionally during the holiday, celebrants eat apples dipped in honey in the hope of having a sweet year, Kaplin said.
