WEST JACKSON — Demolition begins on a dozen homes in the LANA area that were formerly used as fraternity houses at Lambuth University. “It’s a lot of them in bad shape, and they need to tear them down and build new houses,” said Veealice Colble, who has lived near the campus for six years. Officials with the University of Memphis Lambuth said the homes have been vacant for some time. One contractor said demolishing the houses will be good for the neighborhood. “The ones that you can’t repair, the city’s tearing them down, so after it’s all over with, I think it’s going to look pretty good around here,” said Saint Murphy, who paints and repairs some of the historic homes in the area. Not every resident is excited about the face lift. “If you tear something down, it takes a lot of memories away,” said Cody Kulikowski. Kulikowski said he would rather the campus leave the buildings as-is. Officials would not comment on what they plan to do with the vacant lots. Some residents say they would like to see the school build areas the community could enjoy, such as a park.
