WEST JACKSON — Breast cancer survivor Susan Morris celebrates being a five-year survivor and shares her story as support for those in the breast cancer community. “I was a little bit angry, honestly, because I’m a marathon runner and have always been healthy,” Morris said. She is the owner of a local business with her husband in Jackson. She was diagnosed with breast cancer about five years ago after a routine mammogram. “It was just, you know, words you never want to hear and just very difficult to deal with,” Morris said. Her son Spencer is 11-years-old now, and when he talks about his mom there is one word that frequently comes up — strength. “I had a six-year-old at the time,” Morris said. “That’s the first thing you think about.” Morris said sharing her story has not been easy. But now that her cancer is in remission, she volunteers for the Reach to Recovery. The American Cancer Society said mammography is the best way to detect early signs of breast cancer. That is when it is most treatable. “My surgeon told me had I not been getting my mammograms, it could have been a totally different story,” Morris said. “So I was able to save my life through a mammogram.” She encourages others to come out during this month’s events to support those fighting against the disease.
