Man charged with child abuse after allegedly slapping child

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A man was in court Thursday charged with assaulting a child and the child’s mother. Tyler A. Schenk is accused of slapping his live-in girlfriend’s 5-year-old son in the mouth and then head-butting the girlfriend in the forehead, causing the back of her head to hit a door, according to court documents. Schenk is accused of then grabbing the girlfriend by the arm and forcing her and the child outside the residence. Schenk is on probation for convictions on violent offenses in the Portland, Oregon area, according to court documents. Schenk is charged with aggravated child abuse and simple domestic assault. He is being held on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 27 for a preliminary hearing.
