Blue Suede Invitational brings soccer players to Jackson

NORTH JACKSON — Hundreds of soccer players from around the Southeast were in Jackson for the annual Blue Suede Invitational soccer tournament. The tournament is the Jackson Futbol Club’s biggest fundraiser, and event organizers expect to bring in around $17,000. The tournament was moved from August to October this year, and organizers say they are happy with the decision. This year, 77 teams competed and 124 games were played from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. One of the tournament director’s, Shannon Guthrie, said teams had to be limited this year because of park construction, but they still filled capacity. “It helps promote soccer in Jackson,” Guthrie said. “Soccer’s booming right now in the United States, and so it’s great to see the growth here in Jackson also and to have the facilities and the teams be able to come here and support soccer.” Guthrie said all money raised will go toward scholarships for Jackson Futbol Club players, coaching and equipment needs.
