City of Dyersburg takes first steps with housing grant

DYERSBURG, Tenn. — Dyersburg houses in need of repair may get a little help sprucing up. It is all part of a $375,000 grant from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency, which was approved by city leaders this week. The grant is intended to assist citizens to either recover property from blight conditions or recover from situations where housing has deteriorated, said Bob Jones, the city recorder. Jones said residents can apply for help on anything from roof repairs to new bathrooms. Some residents said it is help they need in their communities. “Take care of your home, because this money will not be spit out again for you to use it like this,” said resident James Ronnie Pierce. City hall said applicants will have to put up about $500 of their own to show serious commitment to the project, but they said that is not much in comparison to how much the reconstructions could cost. City officials said the application process will be simple. An outside agency will pick which applicants get money. Those picked out of the lottery will be placed in line to check over their qualifications, which range from income to the type of repairs.
