JACKSON, Tenn.– A community gets involved in the fight for domestic violence awareness. Saturday, people in Jackson learned what domestic violence is, and how to stop the cycle. Sharon Wolfe was the guest speaker for the event at Maranatha Seventh Day Adventist Church in Jackson. She said she spoke to raise awareness for Domestic Violence. “Right now as we’re standing here a woman is being battered. There are children that are witnessing that and that has got to end,” said Wolfe. Rochelle Harris is the Director of Health and Temperance at the church and a former abuse victim. She said the church helped her through. “it’s part of a dysfunctional life and everybody needs healing, and so I just think in the church you can find that,” Harris explained. She said that families will sometimes cover up the abuse just to appear like everything’s normal. According to the national coalition against domestic violence one out of three women and one out of 4 men well experience physical violence by a partner in their lifetime. Harris said the community can help a victim by providing resources and support. “Ask for help, and you don’t have to stay in that, because if you’re a kid and it’s happening its going to affect your adult life. If you’re an adult its gonna continue on and it’s a cycle a vicious cycle,” said Harris Wolfe said new questions need to be asked to stop the violence. “We need to quit asking why the women stays. We got to ask why is it the men do this,” Wolfe said. The Women’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program (WRAP) will host a fundraiser and awareness event called “Walk A Mile” on November 1. During the walk, men from the community get to walk in high heels.
