DYERSBURG, Tenn. — The effort to save a yellow lab in Dyersburg has gone viral. The Facebook post attached to the petition says Beau, a 2-year-old yellow lab, is being put down for killing a duck in his own yard. However, a report from the Dyersburg Police Department as well as court documents paint a different picture of the lab loved by neighbors. The report states on Sept. 19 the lab killed a duck and tried to bite an 8-year-old boy. Court documents say earlier this month, unprovoked Beau acted aggressively toward a Dyersburg police officer and an animal control officer. A judge has since deemed the dog “vicious” and has ordered he be euthanized. Beau is scheduled to be put down Tuesday, and his owner, Danny Higgins, has been fined $253. Higgins spoke with WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News over the phone and said his dog would never hurt anyone, and neighbors in the area agreed. “He is the love of children’s lives,” Jesse James Burton said. “My little grand baby plays with Beau. She has no problem. He sits down, and he won’t jump on them.” Other neighbors believe dogs in their neighborhood are being targeted. “My dog didn’t even bite no one,” Dike Winbush said. “He just basically growled at a person, and they was ready to put my dog to sleep.” The petition to save Beau has reached more than 6,000 electronic signatures.
