MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Colder temperatures mark the beginning of flu season, and health officials in West Tennessee hope residents will do all they can to prevent them from getting sick. So far this year there have been more than 9,000 reported cases of flu-like illnesses in Tennessee. The CDC recommends getting the vaccine in order to prevent the spread of the virus. Health experts say the flu shot does not give you the flu like some may think. “What it does is it helps your body build up immunity against those types of flus that are within that vaccine,” said Shanna Shearon, an epidemiologist with the Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department. Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months and older, especially pregnant women and those at high risk of complications.
