Voters mulling over Amendment 4

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Voters across Tennessee are hitting the polls to weigh in on four different amendments. The last of those being whether nonprofits should be allowed to have lotteries to raise money. As of now, nonprofits are allowed to have certain raffles and cake walks. If the amendment passes, veteran-based nonprofits such as VFWs also could hold games of chance fundraisers. “When a military veteran is on deployment somewhere, their family might need help with paying utility bills, buying groceries or even child care, and that is something that if passed, it would allow the VFW to step in and contribute money to that family,” said Thomas Lewis, senior vice commander of VFW Post 1848. If passed, organizations would be required to get approval by two-thirds of the state legislature.
