Neighbors react to arrest of teens charged with kidnapping and robbing elderly woman

JACKSON, Tenn.–Jackson police charge two teenagers with attacking and robbing an elderly woman on October 15. Neighbors said one week after a woman who lives on Winchester Cove was allegedly tied up inside her home as she was robbed— they are relieved to hear police have charged two suspects. “A person that would do that has to be sick,” said Harold Montgomery, who lives only a few doors down. Shuan Edwards, 18, and a 17-year-old juvenile each face four counts, including aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery. Edwards has a prior drug conviction, according to police. Interim Police Chief Julian Wiser said the two men charged knew each other but would not say if they knew the victim or if she was specifically targeted. Interim Chief Wiser said they do not anticipate future arrests connected to the attack. “We believe Edwards and the juvenile that was arrested are the only 2 people responsible for this incident,” he said. One neighbor who did not wish to be identified, said the subdivision has been safe for the almost 20 years she has lived here. She said that could be changing. “There’s no place you can go that you’re not vulnerable,” she said. Some residents said even with suspects behind bars, they still feel they need to take extra safety precautions at night. “Very conscious of closing the blinds at night and turning on more lights than we have and just being aware of your surroundings,” said one neighbor. Police said home safety can begin with a friendly conversation. “Try to get out, meet your neighbors, and we just need to look out for each other,” said Interim Police Chief Wiser. Several residents on Winchester Cove said they are starting a neighborhood watch.
