Three arrested in Old Medina Winery fire

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Three people have been arrested in the alleged break-in and arson of the Old Medina Winery, according to a release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. This is less than a week after flames ripped through the shuttered building. “It’s unusual that you’ll see an arson case of this type come together so quickly,” Sheriff John Mehr said. Nicholas Beecher, 24, Derek A. Burgess, 25, and Kristen M. Emison, 21, all of Jackson, have been charged in both the Oct. 17 break-in and vandalism and the Oct. 18 fire that damaged the main building of the winery, according to the release. “The case really came forward quickly because we had citizen involvement in this case. People came and started giving us information, people that were even from other states,” Mehr explained. The fire at the former business, located at 2894 Old Medina Road, was ruled an arson, and the resulting damage is estimated at more than $300,000, the release states. Beecher, Burgess and Emison all are charged with two counts of burglary, one count of vandalism over $20,000 and one count of arson of a commercial building, according to the release. “It’s efforts of all of us getting together. That’s what got this solved and we’re looking forward to doing that in the future in working these cases and getting them solved in a hurry,” Madison County Fire Chief Eric Turner said. The arrests come as a result of an investigation conducted by the Madison County Sheriff‘s Office, Madison County Fire Department, Jackson Police Department, Jackson Fire Department and the State Bomb and Arson division.
