Woman finds drugs, guns in backyard near elementary school

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — A West Tennessee family found drugs and guns stashed in their backyard and say drug addicts are knocking on their door looking for their next fix. “Anyone including law enforcement says this is one of the quietest neighborhoods,” said Haywood County Commissioner Robert Green. He said it has been disrupted after three guns and a bag of cocaine were found in his neighbor’s backyard in Brownsville. “I’ve been here about 27 years,” Green said. “Never heard anything of this magnitude in this neighborhood.” According to a police report, a woman on Morrich Avenue made the discovery Sunday on her mother’s property just yards away from where kids play. “This by chance happened next door to East Side Elementary School,” Green said. “It could’ve happened next door to the court house or next door to City Hall.” Green said the aftermath of the finding rippled through the neighborhood. The homeowner’s son said since the case has opened multiple people have come to his mother’s house asking for drugs. He said this is not that type of neighborhood and that he will protect his mother. At East Side Elementary, parents and grandparents are concerned about children being so close to danger. “I think that everybody should be informed about something like that being so close to the schools,” said grandparent Mary Ann McCage as she picked up her 10-year-old grandson. Police said they are still looking for suspects, and Green said the neighborhood is increasing security.
