JACKSON, Tenn — A group of men thought it would be a good idea to walk a mile in heels Saturday. The reason they’re doing it? To fight for a cause. “Domestic violence is something that is very serious,” WRAP Board Member, Darren Lykes told WBBJ Saturday. “It happens to a lot people all the time, and we want people to be comfortable and to know what wrap does.” WRAP (Women’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program) hopes that men will realize the sacrifices women make day in and day out, and take a stand on their behalf. “We’re hoping to raise awareness around the issues of domestic violence in our community, but also primarily today’s purposes to engage men and to work to end violence against women,” WRAP Director Daryl Chansutuhus told WBBJ today. So they did that by walking a mile literally in women’s shoes, and it was a painful sight watching men use all their might to keep their balance. “As time went on and I started walking numbness set in then the tingling set in,” said Marcus Mason, who participated in the event. “It was a good experience, but a very painful experience but it was for a good cause.” WRAP raised thousands of dollars from this event. The money will go to better the free services that they provide for victims. Chansutuhus hopes next year she can see more men strut their stuff in the unusual footwear. “We have to make it an annual event, and hope men find the courage and come out and walk the purple mile,” Chansutuhus said.
