MADISON COUNTY, Tenn.- New information in a fall that killed a West Tennessee hunter during an attempt to fix his tree stand. Madison County deputies said a language barrier made it difficult for first responders. “Deer stands and deer hunting, the danger is out there,” said Sheriff John Mehr of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. Danger that proved deadly for a West Tennessee man. Sheriff Mehr said Bee Vue and his wife were in the woods off Rochelle Road in southwest Madison County, repairing their deer stand. “He had reached out, and was gonna reach, and he slipped, and he fell,” said Sheriff Mehr. Steve Henderson, regional coordinator of the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, said accidents like this happen too often. “I mean truthfully, tree stand accidents are the most common hunting accident out there,” said Henderson. Henderson said using a harness with these stands could have saved Vue’s life. “People just for one reason or another fall out and if they’re not wearing a safety harness that’s where the injury occurs,” said Henderson. He said last year he’s seen about 6 or 7 tree stand related deaths, and that homemade tree stands are most likely to result in accidents. Both the sheriff and TWRA officials said it is important to bring someone with you when using a tree stand and always have a cell phone within reach.
