CARROLL COUNTY, Tenn. — The body of a teenage shooting victim is exhumed in Carroll County after District Attorney General Matt Stowe says new leads warrant a new investigation. Investigators said Tony Drumwright was shot and killed in his backyard in August 1999. No arrests have been made in the case. Friday, Stowe and the victim’s mother held a news conference to announce the new development. “It will be run through the latest DNA testing and have an autopsy performed in an effort to uncover additional evidence that will allow us to resolve this crime,” Stowe said. Becky Drumwright describes what the past 15 years have been like for her and her family. “It’s agony,” she said. “It’s hell. It’s pure agony.” On the day Drumwright died, investigators said Becky and her husband, Henry, came home and found 15-year-old Tony lying in the yard with a gun at his feet. “Somebody came to our home and put a bullet in the back of my son’s head and executed him and murdered him,” Becky said. Stowe said he is optimistic about being able to give the family closure. “We are not going to stop,” he said. “We are investigating this as if he was shot yesterday.” Stowe was at the grave site when medical examiners and TBI officials exhumed Drumwright’s body. “The casket has not been opened yet, but from the outside it does appear to be intact and in good condition, so we have every reason to be optimistic that we’re gonna be able to pull DNA and anything else that we need,” Stowe said. “I would like to say to the people that did this, they have not gotten away with it,” Becky said. “They’ve gotten away with it for a long time. They are coming after them. They will be caught. There will be justice for Tony.” If you have any information about this case, call the district attorney’s tip line at 731-415-7211.
