Haywood Co. fire departments unify for grants

STANTON, Tenn. — Three separate fire departments in Haywood County are joining forces to improve their communication and ultimately save lives. The idea began with the focus around the future Megasite of Haywood County but has grown to include other practicalities. Haywood County, Brownsville and Stanton fire departments have decided to apply for a $200,000 grant together in order to receive a unified digital radio system. The fire chief of Stanton said a grant is the only way they could afford the update. Stanton Mayor Alan Sterbinsky said the grant would benefit everyone in the area, including the Megasite. “From the firefighters grant, anybody within Haywood County will be able to help,” Sterbinsky said. “They will all benefit from being able to talk to each other. The bigger the fire, the more likely you’re gonna have Haywood County, Brownsville and Stanton coming to fight the fire together.” Sterbinsky said they would receive the status of the grant application in a few months.
