Police push gun theft prevention in wake of recent shootings

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — With six shootings and two homicides in Brownsville this week alone, some citizens are asking how to prevent the next act of violence. Those shootings resulted in two arrests, but some are asking how these suspects obtained the guns in the first place. Lt. Mike Johnson of the Jackson and Madison County Crime Stoppers unit said criminals generally possess guns by burglarizing homes and cars. Johnson also said criminals may not have looted the properties specifically for weapons but found them along the way. “If it’s broken into, somebody can get your gun,” Johnson said. “They sell it to somebody else who could maybe shoot somebody with it. That’s where these little criminals, these little thugs are getting these guns that are committing these crimes.” Johnson said these thefts were preventable and that putting guns in safes or using locks on triggers could help save lives. Safe locks are available at local gun stores.
