Experts say talk to your teens about winter driving

JACKSON, Tenn. — As the temperatures cool down, some parents said they worry about their young drivers navigating the icy roads. “In the winter the conditions are very different, slippery, traction isn’t as good, so that’s definitely a concern for me,” parent Duane Mangalindan said. John Lawrence who runs the Teen Driver’s Academy said remind your teens that ice and snow can be dangerous. “Just drive for the conditions,” Lawrence said. “Take your time. Don’t get in a hurry.” Lawrence said the one thing most drivers forget are the parts of the roads that ice first. “There will be places out here on the road tomorrow, even if roads are clear, you’re still gonna have bridges and overpasses that are going to be rather slick,” Lawrence said. Mangalindan said his main concern is their driveway. “There are a lot of turns on our road between home and school, so I definitely want her to drive slow and very carefully,” Mangalindan said. Lawrence said to go through the route with your teen. “The parents know the drive like the back of their hand. They know the locations with the bad places,” Lawrence said. Lawrence says if you are in doubt about your child’s ability to drive, there is nothing wrong with taking the car keys until the weather clears. “When you know the roads are bad, do not take the chance in sending them out,” Lawrence said. Lawrence said it never hurts to remind your kids about wearing seat belts and the dangers of texting and driving.
