Sudden Storm Postpones Relay for Life
The wrath of mother nature proved to be too much for the mother of all fundraisers, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. “I am so disappointed so it may be better in June,” said one participant. Before Friday’s afternoon storms, event leaders said the fundraiser was turning out to be one of the most successful events ever. “To have all the people here, all the food and everything and to have to make the call , it was very hard,” said Relay for Life Committee Chairman Judie Parrish. While Relay for Life celebrates cancer survivors, organizers said luminarie bags that are placed around the walking track symbolizes survivors and those who have lost their fight to cancer. Without them, event leaders said it would not be the same. “With this rain and the lightning, you know we cannot do the most important part of the ceremony,” Parrish said. Despite being postponed, many participants took the celebration indoors. “Because there is nothing like being a survivor,” said one participant. “I am running for my life and I am going to keep on running.” Whether it is in one week or one month, many said they will be back to do it all over again when the weather clears. Parrish said they are aiming at rescheduling the event in June.
