Inmates Getting Education in Jail
Henderson County inmates are taking advantage of their time serving in jail by working to earn their GED. Sheriff Brian Duke tells us inmates are given the opportunity to participate in training classes designed to help them pass the G.E.D. test if they choose. Classes started last week and so twelve inmates have enrolled. Duke says having an education will open doors in the work force for participants and decrease their high chances of ending up back in jail. For inmates, it gives them a chance to make a new start for themselves once they are released. “You gotta be educated to have a decent job these days. You can’t even work McDonalds without a GED. So, I figure I might as well get it while I’m here.” said inmate Travis Young The classes are presented by the Lexington Adult Education Center and funded by a grant from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
