Camel Injures Child At Knoxville Zoo

Knoxville Zoo officials said a 5-year-old boy was injured when he was pinned against a fence by a baby camel and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials told WATE-TV in Knoxville that the boy was visiting the zoo with his parents on Thursday when a baby camel weighing about 400 pounds became startled. The camel partially straddled a fence and pinned the boy against the fence.

Zoo officials said they initially thought the camel had gotten loose and blocked medical personnel from the Knoxville Fire Department from entering the zoo, which is a safety precaution.

The boy was treated outside the gates and taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
