John Freeland, Junior took the stand and told anyone who would who would listen, “he was sorry, express my apologies for the entire situation, just wanted to basically say I’m sorry.” But even with this apology, Freeland said he is not guilty for the 2009 carjacking and shooting death of Carolyn Ward. He was convicted earlier this year in a rare bench trial, in which he opted that a judge not a jury decide his fate. Freeland’s mother, Paula Johnson, begged the judge for compassion. “We realize that J.T. has to accept his punishment for his involvement in this crime, but we also recognize a life taken can not be given back by the taking of another life.” Freeland’s sentencing was delayed for month as his attorney looked for ways to save his life.”I did not find any mitigating factors for the purpose of sentencing as to the benefit of the defendant and I have given it much thought.” After three hours, Judge Morgan came back with his decision on all three counts, 25 years for kidnapping, 5 years years for tampering with evidence and then after asking Freeland to stand, the judge announced his sentence for first degree murder. “Therefore. the the court finds the punishment for the defendant ,John Freeland, Junior shall be death. You shall be put to death by legal injection. May God have mercy on your soul.”
