ACLU, TN School At Odds

The Sumner County school system has replied to a federal lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union this month over religion.

In the response, lawyers for the schools argue U.S. Supreme Court rulings note that church-state interaction is inevitable and we have always tolerated some level of involvement between the two.

ACLU Tennessee Legal Director Tricia Herzfeld declined comment, saying the litigation is pending, according to The Tennessean.

Attorneys representing the schools state that while Gideons International was allowed to distribute Bibles in the schools, the group was not allowed to proselytize. The response denies a claim that a teacher displayed a cross in her classroom.

The religious nonprofit American Center for Law & Justice is defending the schools and says most of the lawsuit’s claims are without merit.
