Unemployment Benefits Extended
If you are among the thousands whose unemployment benefits ran out last month, some much needed help is on the way. As ABC 7 Eyewitness News reported earlier, a last minute bill to extend jobless benefits to thousands of out-of-work Tennesseans is part of the governor’s new budget. The bill, sponsored by Democrats, Senator Lowe Finney of Jackson and State Representative Craig Fitzhugh of Ripley, will give those whose benefits have runout up to 20 more weeks of assistance. The Department of Labor is still determining how Tennesseans will be able to apply for the extended benefits. “People are looking for jobs, but right now jobs are hard to come by in Tennessee and many other states, said Senator Lowe Finney of Jackson. “So until we are able to see the economy turn around, helping people at least make those minimum payments is what we ought to be trying to do.” Senator Finney said he hopes when the legislature returns to Nashville in January, elected officials will work on creating jobs.
