Jackson Police Investigate Memorial Day Shooting
The day the nation honored our fallen heroes turned tragic for one east Jackson neighborhood. According to investigators, Marketis Bailey, 22, of Jackson was gunned down in broad daylight. “My first question is why,” said Councilman-Elect Johnny Dodd. “When are we as people in this community going to come together and speak out about crime in our area?” Officers said Bailey was shot multiple times and was left for dead in the middle of Holland Ave around 2, Monday afternoon. “It is bad, all over here and everything. I just do not see how people can live together and be mean the way they are,” said one WWII Veteran and Holland Ave. resident, who did not wish to be named. “It just shows that they do not have anything to do other than mess up and do things they should not do,” he said. Investigators said they are taking advantage of the fact the shooting happened in the middle of the afternoon. “There are witnesses to it and we are in the process of interviewing those people,” said Jackson Police Department Lt. Tyreece Miller. However, for the Holland Avenue neighborhood, a day of remembrance turned into a day of violence and heartache. “A day like this, to lose a family member or lose anybody, it is sad. It is sad for our city, sad for this district,” said Dodd. “I am asking the person to turn yourself in. It is probably the safest for you also.” Police describe the suspect as a black man in his late teens or early 20s. He has a slender build and is about 5 feet 10 or 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing dark jeans with no shirt, but he was carrying a white T-shirt and a green fitted baseball cap. Witnesses said they last saw him running east on East Chester Street.
