City Council Talks Budget
It was a marathon meeting Tuesday for the Jackson City Council as members hashed out the money issues for the upcoming fiscal year. The meeting, which began at 9 a.m. did not wrap up until almost 4 Tuesday afternoon. In that time, the council passed a bond issue for capital improvement. But the big issue on the agenda was the upcoming budget for next year, which was not voted on Tuesday. As it stands now, the budget for 2011-2012 includes no increased spending with the exception of public safety and there is no change in property taxes. “This is not a time to propose property tax increases, said Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist. “People are still struggling many of them are out of work. Many of them are having problems paying property taxes from last year, so we’re going to take what money we have and spend it and no more.” The city council is scheduled to reconvene Friday morning at 9, when they are expected to vote on the first reading of the budget.
