Memphis To Refund Money

Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division will give about $21 million back to its customers after discovering that it overcharged them for natural gas for more than two years.

The average residential customer will receive a credit of $38 in August, according to The Commercial Appeal.

The amount each of the 370,000 or so customers will get depends on how much gas the customer used.

Acting Chief Financial Officer Dana Jeanes said the problem began in January 2008 when a staffer made a mistake in a formula used to calculate customers’ bills.

Jeanes said it was a fairly small error but added up because it went on for a while without being detected.

In 2007, the utility refunded about $25 million to customers inappropriately charged in advance for natural gas.
