Memorial Day Highway Deaths
The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Safety released preliminary fatality figures for the 2011 Memorial Day Holiday weekend, Friday. A total of 10 people lost their lives in crashes on Tennessee roadways in this year’s 78-hour holiday. This is a drop from the 13 fatalities during the same time last year and the 16 deaths in 2009. The 2011 Memorial Day weekend ran from 6:00 p.m., Friday, May 27 through 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 30. During that time, the Department of Safety reports there were 10 fatal crashes. Six crashes were single vehicle wrecks, while four of them were multiple car crashes. Five of the people killed were vehicle occupants, four were motorcyclists and one was a pedestrian. Three of the five (60 percent) vehicle occupants were not wearing safety restraints.
