Vandals Hit Mississippi Cemetery
Families say they want to know who vandalized their loved ones’ gravesites in north Mississippi’s Union Hill Cemetery.
There are nearly 200 gravestones in the burial place in Union County, and authorities say most were damaged by vandals this past weekend.
Local resident Robin Melton tells WTVA-TV that her grandparents’ gravestone was knocked over, and she can’t understand why anyone would do that.
Some of the damaged tombstones were on veterans’ graves. Many that were destroyed date back to the 1800s.
Sheriff’s investigator Roger Garner says each act of vandalism carries a $500 fine or a year in prison.
