State Colleges Brace For Tuition Increases
Tennessee Board of Regents institutions looking at some sort of a tuition increase, under a new proposal. The amount of the increase will vary by school, but most of them average around 10 percent. In West Tennessee, Jackson State Community College, Dyersburg State Community College and the University of Memphis will all be affected by the proposed increase. Dr. Bruce Blanding, President of Jackson State Community College, says the increase is significant, but needed. “I don’t like to see the tuition go up. That does cause a financial burden to a lot of students. On the other hand the institution is in desperate need of resources,” Blanding says. The proposed increase is currently near 9 percent for Jackson State students. That works out to about $11 more per credit hour. For full-time students that works out to an additional $300 per year, according to Blanding.
